KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh on Friday said Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay should « resign (from his judge’s position) and join politics » after questioning whether a judge could go on indulging in « politics », « helping the opposition » and « acting (in a manner) detrimental to the judiciary » while using his chair as « a judicial shield ».
Ghosh’s statement came a few hours after the judge said in court that there was « a Bhaipo who had a four-storeyed house worth a crore » and then questioned where « so much of money came from ». Justice Gangopadhyay did not mention any political leader by name while hearing a case on Covid compensation.
« One gets a compensation of Rs 2 lakh after dying from consuming illicit liquor. How much does one get after dying of Covid? Is anyone given the money (compensation) at all? » he asked. « There is a Bhaipo (nephew) who has a four-storeyed home. The house is worth a crore. Where does so much money come from? » he then asked.
The judge was hearing a petition filed by Dipti Sarkar, who moved court demanding a job and compensation as she had been left with two children to bring up after her husband – a primary school teacher from North 24 Parganas – died of Covid on August 1, 2020. The HC will hear the case again on September 28.
The Trinamool Congress responded less than an hour after the judge’s aside. Spokesperson Ghosh posted on X: « Can anything be said from a judge’s chair? Can politics be done (from that chair)? Can the opposition be helped? »
TMC: Can anything be said from a judge’s chair?
Within an hour of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s aside while hearing a Covid compensation case, Trinamool Congress posted on X: “Can anything be said from a judge’s chair? Can politics be done (from that chair)? Can the opposition be helped? Can someone continue to act (in a manner) detrimental to the judiciary? Can someone use the judicial shield to spread canards like they do at roadside protest meetings? Ganguly, resign and join politics.”
“Ganguly, while growing up, heard a lot about (former Bengal CM) Jyoti Basu’s son, Chandan Basu. Did he refer to him when he made the Bhaipo remark? And, if he meant someone else, he should quit that chair and join politics. This is taking things a bit too far,” Ghosh said in another post. The Supreme Court in April this year had taken exception to an interview given by Justice Gangopadhyay to a TV channel, when he had referred to Trinamool Congress general secretary Banerjee, and asked the Calcutta High Court Chief Justice to reassign a case to another judge.
